Helping People With Disabilities
Dr. Marcia Scherer and Ms. Shelley Ducatt discuss how to interact with people who have a disability. Dr. Scherer is author of the book Living in the State of Stuck: How Assistive Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities. She is the director of the Institute for Matching Person and Technology and Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Ms. Shelley Ducatt is the Associate Director of the Student Disability Services at Texas Tech University.

This was an interesting interview, but there is one point I would like to disagree with. Dr. Scherer implies that the days of segregation are over and that we are now an “inclusive society”. This is not really true. People with disabilities still face segregation and discrimination. Jobless rates amongst people with disabilities is unacceptably high and while accessibility is improving, the majority of buildings are still not accessible. We have a long way to go in order to consider ourselves an “inclusive society”.
